Reflections on Discovering the Inner Mother: A Guide to Healing the Mother Wound and Claiming Your Personal Power by Bethany Webster

I wish, and so will you, that I had this book on my night table when I was five…

I wish, and so will you, that Ms. Bethany Webster were my grade I teacher…in all subjects…

Because, just like the famous “Theory of Everything” in physics, it ties it all together and explains it all.

With the difference that the Theory of Everything has not been developed yet, whereas Ms. Webster’s body of work elegantly arrives at a metaphorical theory of everything when it comes to our individual, family, society and planet reasons for showing up in the world the way we do.

Why I picked it up

I am a personal empowerment coach and an avid reader.

Based on my interests and professional training, Ms. Webster’s book should have come into my awareness the moment it was published.

But… it did not. Apparently, the Universe had plans for me which included some very hard work figuring out things on my own first.

I picked it up immediately when it was mentioned in a completely unrelated webinar and, for me, it was like a universal chime sounded in the world.

While the webinar was still going on, I went to amazon.com and ordered it.

And… am I ever glad I did!

What it is about

The book outlines the premise of a “mother wound”, which translates into a “mother gap”, and which, when introduced and understood, explains not only individual experiences for both men and women, but also societal and planetary behaviours.

When we hear the word “wound”, most of us immediately think “pain”, “suffering” and “blame”.

Thankfully, this is absolutely not a “blame the mother” endeavour.

It is, rather, an exposé on the multi-generational wounds inflicted by patriarchal societies on their female members, individually and collectively.

It is also an explanation of the chain of pain which begins to unfold for everyone, if the original wound is not healed.

The Mother Wound is a set of beliefs and patterns that originate from early dynamics swith your mother that can cause you to unconsciously limit or sabotage yourself.

Bethany Webster

The mother gap is the difference between what you needed from your mother and what you actually got.

You must read this book if:

  1. You have a mother (LOL)
  2. You are a mother (or a father)
  3. You have done no, some, or a lot of, inner work
  4. You are a coach of…anything

If you have a mother, you will be able to understand the dynamics of your relationship and assess whether you have experienced the mother wound, or not (lucky you!)

Moreover, this book might help you establish or deepen the connection to your mother, whether she is still around or not, and begin to experience compassion for her and all who came before her and after, including yourself.

If you are a mother (or a father), you will get the invaluable insights and tools which, if you are willing to use them, will enable you to break the “chain of pain.” In other words, your fortunate children will not get this painful inheritance from you.

If you have done no inner work, Ms. Webster’s book will entice you to do so, and what a gift that is!

If you have done some inner work, this book will increase the desire to continue and will accelerate the healing process.

If you have done a lot of inner work, which happens to be my case, you will experience tremendous relief, satisfaction brought about by the confirmation of your conclusions and exhilaration at being part of a global liberation of potential.

I bookmarked almost every page and I kept saying to myself: “Yes, yes, yes”!, and, “ I never thought about this and it makes so much sense”!

If you are a coach of anything, reading this book will increase your effectiveness and the benefits you provide to your clients a hundred fold.

Imagine this: if more and more of us became aware of this fundamental concept of mother wound, if we were willing to do the work to heal it in ourselves, a time may come on this planet when even the metaphorical scars would not be there, because the mother wound would not occur in the first place and there would be nothing to heal!

Amen to that!
